As a high school student, you have to make a lot of difficult decisions; what colleges do you want to apply to, what will you study, what do you want to be when you grow up? At 15 or 16 (or even 36), these questions can be overwhelming. With summer opportunities, you have the chance to gain experiences that may help you find some answers. Maybe it is appealing to travel to another country to experience a foreign culture, or to learn a new language. Or perhaps, you may want to explore if a career interest is the right field for you.
The following is a list of college preparatory, internship and summer enrichment programs for high school students. Many of the programs take place in or around Los Angeles, while some require more distant travel. This guide lists a basic description of each program, along with eligibility requirements and application deadlines . You can follow the links to individual program websites for more information about each program. In order to assist you with timely planning during the application process, programs are listed according to the month the application is due. It is best to start working on your application several months in advance, in order to give yourself enough time to prepare your application materials and to obtain letters of recommendation (if applicable). Be sure to confirm application deadlines for all programs you apply to on the individual program website.
Be sure to check back regularly for upcoming opportunities.
In addition to using the lists below, please visit www.teenlife.com, a search engine for enrichment opportunities exclusively for teens.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY SUMMER JOURNALISM INSTITUTE
For those who are thinking about a career in communications or who simply enjoy writing, we have just the thing: the Boston University Summer Journalism Institute, presented by the New England Center for Investigative Reporting (NECIR).
For the last year 10 years, NECIR has taught high school students core skills in news reporting, interviewing, and writing, with a focus on hands-on experience in and around the city of Boston. (Our motto is: Make Boston Your Beat.) Students are taught by award-winning journalists, such as Pulitzer Prize winner Lara Salahi, who show them how to follow facts and get to the heart of stories affecting communities.
In previous years, for example, students spoke to policy makers about climate change, reported from a massive immigration march, and covered a Senator's town hall meeting. They learned how to interview strangers, ask probing questions and assemble it all in a concise story on deadline. Students were challenged to step outside their comfort zone – and experience life as a working journalist.
Over each two-week session, students learn practical skills, but they also get a taste of campus and city life. Students have the chance to:
Session 2: July 8 to July 19
Session 3: July 22 to Aug. 2
